This shows the influence of the fruitful partnership of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll, which introduced the concept of structure and planting. Lutyens' hard framework of paving, rills and pergolas were softened by Jekyll's subtly coloured drifts of hardy herbaceous perennials.
